‘‘sub rosa‘‘ is the combination of sounds that create a therapeutic effect, interspersed in the space between crystal bowl frequencies (Laura Marija Balčiūnaitė) and fragments of field recordings and electroacoustic compositions (Karolina Kapustaitė).
sub rosa - under the rose - phrase originates from ancient Greece and signifies the hidden mysteries and secrets. Ancient Romans wore rose garlands on special occasions and when these were hung above important meeting places, the conversations that took place beneath were considered sub rosa, or ‘under the rose.’ It was understood that things said ‘under the rose’ would be kept secret and not repeated.
‘‘sub rosa‘‘ would like to offer rose aroma infused non linear echoing fractions of ancient conversation fossils from parallel timelines and places still travelling to ours. Particles of dust, like a spoken secret that cannot be repeated (sub-rosa), floating in the quivering air, containing memories and accumulating sound information within themselves. Dust being moved in the air by secret whispers and leftovers of promises, legends and luscious words. sub rosa is the past which is present; rose secrets that make the dust tremble.
Laura Marija Balčiūnaitė (aka saintpetal) explores concepts of health practice, sound and drawing and movement, connection between movement through drawing - synaesthesia. Materials such as crystal bowls and flower petals help her explore new forms of softening, unravel and delve into vulnerability; expand art forms in fields yet to be discovered.
Karolina Kapustaitė is a young emerging Lithuanian composer. Her compositions raise the significance of an idea, which often originates within extrageneric subjects and determines various compositional aspects, importance of a distinctive sound and a symbol.
