Shade

Shade was a one-day workshop organized by Materials & Applications with artist Edith Abeyta. By combining trash gleaned off the streets of downtown Los Angeles and transforming the items into sculptural quilts through community-based collaboration, the workshop exposes the ugly side of abundance in the beautiful objects she makes. Several dozens of people working together have crocheted thousands of recycled plastic grocery bags to create a 10′ x 15′ crocheted awning.
