No Movement is a site-specific installation for an historic streamline moderne gas station in Adam’s Square Mini Park, Glendale, CA, that is a sound piece made for shortwave local FM radio and a sculpture made of car parts. The sound piece is built with layers of recordings of my driving commute over several days from home to work and is the length of my commute one way. Road noise, car sounds, radio stations, and words mix with clips of nature sounds or voices speaking on the urgency of climate change. The layers converge into an experiential sound work that examines how little our personal relationship with our cars have changed since the streamline moderne architectural era that celebrated the industrial revolution and leaves room for wonder on how we might shift towards a greener independent way of travel. Erin Fussell is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher based in Los Angeles, California. Her work flattens the hierarchy of creative mediums and reflects the experience of everyday living. From hitchhiking and working on organic farms in New Zealand to an artist residency in Ghana to performing seasonal labor in an Alaskan fishing lodge, she seeks out unique experiences to broaden her perception for her practice. Erin’s work has been exhibited at CoCA Seattle, Site Santa Fe, Tamarind Institute; screened at Stone + Water in Seoul, Korea, Coaxial in Los Angeles, and Open Access television in Portland, Oregon; and heard on Soundart Radio in the UK. Currently, she is digitizing special collections at the Getty Research Institute.
